Gender Equity Issues The Constitution and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 guarantee equal rights to women, yet equality has not yet been achieved. Why do double-standards in behavior, responsibility, and pay continue? Why are women taken less seriously than men, from politics to the return counter at the local store? Why are gender-based jokes still widely applauded, while racial- and ethnic-based jokes are not? Why are men who select female-dominated careers (hairdressers, nurses, bakers, secretaries, florists) often perceived to be homosexual because of their career choice? Public Education Despite recent political rhetoric to the contrary, the public education system seems to be successful for the vast majority of students. Why is it not a successful experience for others? Who or what is responsible for that lack of success? What can we do to help these students become successful in life? Is it the schools' responsibility to cure the social ills in students' lives (e.g., pregnancy, substance abuse, neglect, poverty)? Should public schools be allowed to deny admission or remove disruptive students to protect the educational rights of serious students, as private schools may do? The Current Social Climate Due to political, economic, and technological changes, the world is rapidly shrinking. People across the country and around the world are rapidly becoming our close neighbors, yet we cannot seem to get along. Why do so few people take responsibility for their own actions, from criminal activity to child support? Why do we seem to have so little compassion for others? Why are we so eager to condemn those whose lifestyles or beliefs are different from our own? Why are we so reluctant, or so unable, to see the world from the point of view of our fellow man/woman? Why can't we understand that the world is our village, and all of the children are our own? | My interests | ||||||||||||||||
